Just the other day I went with my shih tzus to the vet for a parvo vaccination. George weighs in at nineteen and a half pounds and Eve and sixteen and half lbs. The two of them are most happy when they are meeting their friendly veterinary doctor soon, I think it is an attention thing. Eve insisted on entering first by evoking such a protest, George followed with his tail between his legs.
Eve ran back out when the veterinary doctor had completed examining her Something strange then happenned Eve began to throw up and within 5 minutes was vomiting all over the veteran. Our shih tzu was so ill she couldnt move not even an inch. We hung around in the hope that her state would recover quite rapidly. It went from bad to worse, she lost control of her bowl, and didn't seem to be able to concentrate on anything.
Our vet John was very quick off the market and got some steroids into our shitzu as fast as he could. Only time would enlighten whether this would have the preferred outcome on the vaccination she had been given. Her breathing became very strenuous, and she seemed even less reactive. John then advised us that we get her to the specialist dog hospital in our area so they could provide her 24/7 aid. That afternoon and night was doubtful.
She had many I.V. lines and oxygen. Few people in the clinic were particularly positive about the possible outcome for our shih tzu dog . Tender loving care with the hospital drugs were her firm diet for 4 days whilst there. This reaction to the injection caused her to go into shock, along with swelling and bleeding in her stomach and intestines. But, my little girl came through this, marvelously. She is on the mend at home.
Eating a little at a time, drinking, but sleeping a lot. There is little doubt in my mind that she will be A ok in a month or two. It has been a sharp learning curve these last few months.
The shih tsu breed are most effected by these types of injections apparently and it is not that strange .I am on a bit of crusade now to make sure people manage to obtain "full disclosure".This was a nightmare and very costly.I dont suggest anybody goes through this like we had to.
