USYD OM OM – Sydney University Hindu Society – is a student society containing a group of students keenly interested in understanding and propagating Hinduism. The idea of a Hindu Society was hatched in July 2003. It took us some time to get the first 20 members that we required, but after we did, the real journey begun. We’ve had weekly discussion groups that explore a wide range of topics, from the fundamental misconceptions such as the Caste System and Idol Worship, to Women in Hinduism and the symbolism of our names. We have celebrated all the major Hindu festivals – such as Deepavali (Festival of Lights), Janmashtami (Krishna’s birthday) and Holi (Festival of Colours). We have actively participated in interfaith dialogue on the campus, as well as representing Hinduism in the Cultural Diversity and Multicultural Days.
